Frontier Developments (FDev) have announced intentions of their second alpha stage for Elite: Dangerous. Worth the wait? I think so, we're getting multiplayer clients!
Details are exceptionally thin on the ground thanks to the tight lips of FDev employees on the forums and elsewhere, but we're excited.
Mystical Awakening members - keep a close eye out for announcements of co-op sessions. I hope also we an arrange tournaments between ourselves and our friends. If you don't already have your microphone sorted, you still have a couple of weeks.
Looking forward to flying alongside you all,
p.s. if you're in need of any flight tips, my "back-to-basics" series has gone quite well on YouTube.
It rocks. If this is the quality of Alpha then we should expect great things for the final release. However, a cautionary note. They've had a lot of time to get this alpha out. What will be interesting is to see how adept FD are at creating and fixing parts of the game and handling balance when it all becomes more far more complex than it is just now.
Nevertheless, today could've been so very different as we've seen many times before with pre-launch hype, and it wasn't. The game is smooth; the controls are awesome; the graphics are filled with amazing detail; the flight mechanics are great. My only slight concern is the artificial creation of maximum ship speeds per ship. I'd rather have seen variable acceleration.
One of the Frontier Devs, Mike Evans, was with us in the stream and was saying that he's been hearing a continual stream of goodwill off the back of Alpha. No surprises there.
"Starting the Elite: Dangerous Alpha process on schedule is a significant milestone for Frontier. Involving our backers from this stage of the development will give us access to valuable feedback that we will use to ensure the released game is as polished as possible."
Well, there's not been a lot out of Frontier Developments this week:
They've extended their original backers offers to today. Which netted them an extra £150k or so. They haven't yet come back with a second proposal on microtransactions, not that we expected them to. The other issue... of the availability of the Alpha client hasn't been addressed official either. But we're running out of runway in 2013, so fingers crossed it will be before everyone disappears for the winter holiday period.
So yeah, no news is good news.
Elite: Dangerous - Alpha on Monday, 9th, 2013 anyone prepared to set odds on that :D ?
